Kayak Challenge 2012

Around Wales kayak challenge 2012

It’s now time. Mike & Steve are currently on their way towards Aberthaw, south wales to start the journey at 6am tomorrow morning. Once again the weather has kicked up some high winds so the departure venue had to change. We all wish them them and please check on their progress and donate generously! Updates and pics to follow!

Day 1

Mike and Steve finally set off this morning (19th). They are now camped at Porthcawl. Only a short day today due to bad weather conditions. Tomorrow they are hoping the wind will drop and they can make a crossing over to the Mumbles..keep an eye out for them!!

Day 2/3

Weather is not being kind to the two kayakers with force 5 headwinds! From Porthcawl they made a crossing over to the mumbles and then on the next around worms head and past llangennith. Click here to see a map of their progress so far. Forecast for the next few days not looking too good.

Day 4/5

No change on the weather front. They have made it to Freshwater East where they are trying to stop their tents from being blown away..map here

Day 6/..?

They have made it through Jack sound and ramsey sound…sounded hairy scary!! and landed at whitesands. Trouble is its now blowing force 6-8 sunday and monday so they’ll be sitting it out and hopefully be setting off on tuesday morning. They are in good spirits despite fighting headwinds the entire way! All they need now is a few days settled weather to make it to Anglesea and beyond! Heres a short video of their trip so far….click here

Where are they now?

From Whitesands they continued north landing at Abermawr. From there they made it to Poppit Sands and then onto New Quay where they met the CBMWC team. Next stop was Twyn and preparations to make the open crossing to Aberdaron. In fact after 12.5 hours kayaking and 81km later!!! they made it to Morfa Nefyn. Haven’t heard anything since so will report in when I know their next location. They are now running out of time as they both have to return to work on the 12th! Good luck to them making the final push around Anglesea. Please donate generously!

The run up to set off 2012…

Well it’s quickly approaching April 2012 and time to make our second attempt at circumnavigating Wales by sea kayak. 650 miles of coastline and canals, all in aid of CBMWC so please give generously. We’ll be adding podcasts on a daily basis so please check up and find out how things are progressing.

Last year we set off in September but were hounded by bad weather all the way, catching the tail end of hurricanes Irene and Katia as they battered the shores of Wales. Here is a short video of our last attempt.

We have been getting out training again on the open sea and also rivers to keep up our fitness. This includes getting out in all types of conditions, some pleasurable and some not! Like rock hopping in 10ft swells see short video here

Latest trip was a weekend paddling around Skomer & Skokholm where the wildlife was very friendly…

Here is a video from one of our river trips…Another training day video coming soon, here is the teaser…
