Monday 26th October: Boat Based Survey Results: 15 bottlenose dolphins; 6 Atlantic grey seals.

 

2 hour survey start time 11:00

Weather conditions: sea state 0 to 2; visibility >10km; light to medium swell; westerly to north westerly wind

 

At 11:04, five bottlenose dolphins, one juvenile and four adults, were seen east of New Quay head. They were foraging at a distance of 60 metres from the boat. The next and last sighting of the trip was at 11:18 of an Atlantic grey seal in the water, half way towards Cwmtydu.

Weather conditions: sea state 1 to 2; visibility >10km; light to medium swell; south westerly to southerly wind

 

During this boat trip, five Atlantic grey seals were seen: The first one was hauled out close to Castell Bach. It was spotted there at 13:23. At 13:42, three seals were seen in the water by Trwyn Crou at a distance of 30 metres from the boat. The last seal was seen at 14:33 shortly before reaching New Quay head on the way back to the harbour. It was hauled out of the water.

Five minutes into the trip, eight bottlenose dolphins were spotted off New Quay head. The group consisted of six adults and two juveniles and they were leaping as well as foraging and slowly travelling. Five of them swam in a northerly direction, three westwards.

At quarter past four, a mother and calf bottlenose dolphin were seen a short way east of Cwmtydu. They were foraging.
