Sighting Summary

26/07/10 Boat survey results: three bottlenose dolphins and six Atlantic grey seals
Source : CBMWC

2hr start time: 09:55

Weather Conditions: sea state 2, visibility 1-10km becoming >10km, swell light

A quiet trip with one sighting of a lone bottlenose dolphin at 11:40 as the boat was heading back to the harbour. The individual was thought to be foraging at depth.

2hr start time: 11:59

Weather Conditions: sea state 2, visibility >10km, swell light

The trip began with a sighting of the single, adult bottlenose dolphin which had also been seen on the previous trip. It was in the same location just off the New Quay Head and was still thought to be foraging at depth. The next sighting was an hour and a half into the trip and was of a female Atlantic grey seal. She was hauled out on the rocks at New Quay Head. The trip ended with a final sighting, once again of the adult bottlenose dolphin foraging around the yellow buoy just off the New Quay Head, presumable the same one that had been seen at the start of the trip.

2hr start time: 14:00

Weather Conditions: sea state 2-3, visibility 1-10km becoming >10km, swell light

This trip was very similar to the previous one. Again, the same adult bottlenose dolphin was seen at the start and end of the trip foraging off of the New Quay Head. The female Atlantic grey seal that was hauled out on the rocks on the previous trip was also still in the same location, hauled out on rocks underneath the large bird colony on New Quay Head.

2hr start time: 16:10

Weather Conditions: sea state 1-2, visibility >10km, swell light

The first sighting was at 16:16 and was off two bottlenose dolphins. They were travelling in an easterly direction and thought to be searching for prey whilst on the move. The next three sightings were of Atlantic grey seals. The first was spotted at 16:48, and was of a female in the water near Castell Bach. The next was seen five minutes later and was of a juvenile seen hauled out on the rocks just passed Cwmtydu beach. At 17:04 two females were seen in the water off of Trwyn Crou. The boat then headed out to sea for its offshore leg of the trip back to New Quay. It was a quiet leg with nothing being seen until the boat had passed New Quay Head when, one again, a single, adult bottlenose dolphin was observed and thought to be foraging at depth around the yellow buoy indicating the voluntary speed limit of the harbour area.

1.5hr start time: 18:04

Weather Conditions: sea state 1-2, visibility >10km, swell light

The final trip of the day started like the previous trips, with a sighting of a bottlenose dolphin thought to be foraging at depth in the area around the yellow buoy off of the New Quay Head. The rest of the trip passed without incident and it was not until the boat was heading back into harbour that two bottlenose dolphins were spotted. They were in roughly the same area, just off of the New Quay Head, so most likely the individual spotted at the start of the trip had been joined by another animal. They were thought to be foraging at depth.
