Weather conditions: Sunny/Fair, sea state 1, wind direction none/S
11 bottlenose dolphins, 1 Atlantic Grey Seal

At the start of the survey a group of five dolphins including a calf were seen travelling west from the Cardinal Buoy towards the headland. Here they were joined by two other dolphins before dispersing and foraging throughout the bay. The group then reformed at the Cardinal Buoy and headed north east towards Aberaeron. Meanwhile a second group of four dolphins entered the bay from the west and joined up with the first group who were now returning towards the headland. Throughout the survey there was much leaping and tail slapping behaviour observed. Mid survey a lone grey seal was seen off north of the harbour wall.

2hr survey. Start time 13:00
Weather conditions: Fair, sea state 1, wind SW
11 bottlenose dolphins

The dolphins observed in the previous survey period split into two groups and ranged throughout the general area between the headland and the Cardinal Buoy. They were foraging but also exhibited social behaviour with many leaps and tail slapping. Numbers diminished through the second half of the survey as the dolphins travelled west. In the final 15 minutes the group, now numbering at least 10 individuals, returned into the bay and were again observed leaping and tail slapping.

2hr survey. Start time 15:00
Weather conditions: Fair, sea state 1, wind direction SE/S
12 bottlenose dolphins

Continuing from the previous survey at least eight dolphins including a calf were present in the bay foraging in the area between the headland and the Cardinal Buoy. Numbers increased to a minimum of twelve individuals with 3 calves / juveniles as further dolphins entered the bay from the west. The animals headed out of the area around the headland before in the final 10 minutes four returned.

Midway through the survey a group of 5 bottlenose dolphins, including Snowcap and her calf as well as an unidentified mother and calf pair and lone juvenile, were spotted travelling into the bay. They headed towards the Cardinal buoy and one calf was seen throwing seaweed into the air. The group then changed direction and travelled past the headland at speed where they passed out of sight of our Living Seas volunteer.

29/11/2016: 4 bottlenose dolphins

2hr survey. Start time 09:00
Weather conditions: Sunny, sea state 1, wind direction E
4 bottlenose dolphins

Despite the calm sea and perfect spotting conditions the survey was very uneventful, until the last 15 minutes when a group of 4 dolphins were seen travelling past the headland into the bay.

28/11/16: 7 bottlenose dolphins

2hr survey. Start time 09:00
Weather conditions: Sunny/Fair, sea state 2, wind direction S/SE
7 bottlenose dolphins

A total of seven dolphins, including two mother and calf pairs, were spotted travelling and foraging throughout the bay. At one point our Living Seas Volunteer observed the dolphins displaying lots of splashy behaviour and leaping out of the water. The dolphins stayed in the bay for the full two hour survey.

28/10/16: 16 bottlenose dolphins , 3 Atlantic grey seals

2hr survey. Start time 09:00

Weather conditions: Overcast/dull/fair, sea state 2, wind direction SW

5 bottlenose dolphins, 1 Atlantic grey seal

1 bottlenose dolphin was seen travelling east from around the headland at the start of the survey, surfacing regularly. It was joined by another 2 dolphins in the second 15 minutes, and leaping behaviour was observed. All 3 dolphins then travelled west together towards the headland, and a grey seal was observed between the harbour wall and the fish factory. During the second half of the survey, 2 dolphins were seen surfacing regularly and travelling east, offshore of the fish factory. These 2 dolphins were joined by a third, and an additional dolphin was spotted further offshore, travelling in. Lunging behaviour was later exhibited by this group, and another 2 dolphins were seen near the cardinal buoy. A grey seal was seen again near to Dolau beach. In the final 15 minutes of the survey, 4 dolphins were seen near the cardinal buoy, with leaping behaviour observed, 1 dolphin was seen offshore of the fish factory, and a grey seal was again spotted near Dolau beach.
